From Hogs to Riches
Bansud Livestock Multi-Purpose Cooperative
BLMC was established and registered in 2000 with CDA LGA Reg. No. 4700. It was composed of 317 enterprising hog raisers in Oriental Mindoro specifically at the town of Bansud.
In the year 2005, the cooperative started to venture into meat processing on top selling animal feeds and vet. med. products.
Equiped with knowledge from various trainings on meat processing and minimal capital, the cooperative started out its meat processing operations using a set of crude equipment: an LPG-fired stove, and other traditional equipment in making its regular Longganiza, Tocino, Footlong and Skinless Longganiza.
On the first attempt on the market, because of the growing horde of commercially-available processed meat it is very hard to generarate a good sales so that the venture had to be subsidized by the cooperative's trading business. However, with the patience and deligence of the management and by the help of the members who patronized the products the sales began to increased. Nevertheless, the coop's production equipment and accessories have to be enhance to improve product quality and market competitiveness.
Realizing these critical technology needs, BLMC sought the assistance of DOST-MIMAROPA throught PSTC-Oriental Mindoro in 2009. The DOST Regional office granted BLMC a technology upgrading support amounting Php 150,000.00 to improve its efficiency and infuse current goods manufacturing practies in its food processing operations. Likewise, as part of the intervention package, DOST-MIMAROPA also provided nutritional Analysis of BLMC's product and appropriate packaging and labelling design.
These developments were vital in creating the firm's own brand the Mindoro's Pride Processed Meat, making the products saleable not just in the municipality but throughout the other province as well. True to its commitment, the enterprise was able to achieve its goal by producing at least 3,000 kgs of processed meat per month or an average increment of more than 100 percent from its benchmark production data.
